Directional Drilling Insurance

One bore through an existing line can lead to a claim bigger than the job. Many liability policies limit underground damage, so we read the forms before you buy, compare insurance companies that write boring work, and match your limits to utility and municipal contracts. Call or text with your next contract and we'll go through it with you.

Directional drilling

Coverage Built for Directional Drilling

Directional drilling runs under roads, waterways and existing utilities. We place it with insurance companies that understand the work.

  • General liability with underground (XCU) coverage
  • Contractors pollution liability for drilling fluids and frac-outs
  • Contractors equipment for drill rigs, locators and mud systems
  • Commercial auto for trucks and trailers
  • Workers comp for your crews
  • Umbrella limits and bonds utility contracts require

Good to Know

Before You Buy

Drilling claims often come from what's below ground and out of sight. We go through each one with you before you sign.

  • XCU. Some liability policies limit or exclude underground damage, often called the XCU exclusion, so it's worth checking.
  • Frac-outs. Drilling fluid that surfaces where it shouldn't, called a frac-out, can be treated as pollution, which many policies exclude.
  • Equipment. Drill rigs and locating equipment need contractors equipment coverage, since liability doesn't cover your own machines.
  • Line strikes. Hitting an existing utility is a common drilling claim, so contracts often ask for higher limits.
  • Rented rigs. Rented and leased equipment can often be included, along with the rental agreement's requirements.
  • Utility contracts. Utility and telecom contracts often require additional insured status and set limits. Send them before you sign.

Work Trucks Need Commercial Auto

Personal auto usually excludes vehicles used mainly for business. Commercial auto covers your trucks and the people who drive them.

Contracts Often Ask for Higher Limits

A commercial umbrella adds a layer above your liability, auto and employers liability, often for less than raising each limit.

Your Equipment Isn't Covered by Liability

General liability covers damage to others, not your own machines. Contractors equipment coverage protects those.

Questions

What Directional Drilling Contractors Ask Us

Does my policy cover hitting a buried line?

It depends on the policy. Some limit or exclude underground damage. We check the forms and place your work where it's covered.

Is a frac-out covered?

It can be treated as pollution, which many liability policies exclude. Contractors pollution liability can fill that gap.

Are rented rigs covered?

Contractors equipment coverage can include rented and leased equipment, plus the rental agreement's requirements.
