Know Before You Buy

What New York City Clients Should Know

New York's laws add requirements you will not find in most states.

General information only, not legal advice. Laws change, and your policy's terms decide what's covered. We'll confirm what applies to you before you buy.

  • No-fault auto is mandatory. Every New York auto policy includes at least $50,000 of Personal Injury Protection, which pays medical bills and lost wages regardless of fault.
  • Employers need more than comp. New York employers generally must carry workers' comp plus Disability and Paid Family Leave benefits for their employees.
  • The Scaffold Law. New York's Labor Law 240 holds owners and contractors strictly liable for many gravity-related injuries, like falls from heights. Contractor liability policies vary widely in how they handle these claims.
  • Co-ops and condos have board rules. Many buildings require unit owners to carry specific coverage and limits. Your HO-6 or co-op policy should match the building's requirements.
  • Coastal flood risk. Hurricane Sandy showed how far flooding can reach in the city. Flood is a separate policy, and standard home policies exclude it.

Questions

New York City Insurance Questions

Don't see your question? Ask us directly. A licensed agent will answer, in English or Spanish.

What does New York's Disability and Paid Family Leave coverage do?

It replaces part of an employee's wages when they are out with an off-the-job illness or injury, or caring for family. Most New York employers must provide it alongside workers' comp.

Why is contractor insurance more expensive in New York?

The Scaffold Law makes owners and contractors strictly liable for many fall injuries, so insurers price New York construction work higher. We compare policies to find the right terms.

Do you write co-op and condo policies?

Yes. We match your policy to your building's requirements and the improvements you have made to your unit.
