Know Before You Buy

What Chicago Clients Should Know

Weather, basements and city licensing are what most often change coverage in Chicagoland.

General information only, not legal advice. Laws change, and your policy's terms decide what's covered. We'll confirm what applies to you before you buy.

  • Sewer backup needs its own coverage. Many Chicago basements flood when storm sewers back up. Standard home policies usually exclude water backup unless you add an endorsement.
  • Frozen pipes and ice dams. Winter freeze damage is generally covered, but insurers expect heat to be maintained. Vacant or seasonal homes need the right policy.
  • Illinois auto minimums. Illinois requires at least 25/50/20 liability plus uninsured motorist coverage. Many drivers buy higher limits to protect their assets.
  • Chicago licenses general contractors. General contractors working in Chicago need a license from the Department of Buildings, which requires proof of insurance. Many trades also need their own licenses.
  • Comp for nearly every employer. Illinois requires workers' comp for nearly all employers with employees, including part-time workers.

Questions

Chicago Insurance Questions

Don't see your question? Ask us directly. A licensed agent will answer, in English or Spanish.

Does homeowners insurance cover basement water backup?

Usually not on its own. Water backup coverage is an endorsement you add to the policy. We recommend it for most Chicago-area homes with basements.

Do I need a license to work as a contractor in Chicago?

General contractors need a Chicago Department of Buildings license, and the city asks for proof of insurance. We provide the certificates you need.

Do you insure Chicago condos?

Yes. We match your HO-6 policy to your association's master policy so there are no gaps between them.
