Coverages

What Most Contractors Carry

General Liability

Property damage and injuries you cause on a job. Most GCs and permits require it, often with additional insured wording.

Workers Comp

Required for most contractors with employees. In Florida, construction businesses need it with even one employee, and some officers can file an exemption.

Bonds

License, permit, performance and payment bonds.

Commercial Auto

Work trucks and vans, including tools and equipment you carry.

Tools and Equipment

Covers your gear on the truck, on site and in storage.

Builders Risk

The structure itself while it's under construction or renovation, for contractors and developers.

Umbrella

Extra limits on top of your liability and auto policies when a contract calls for them.

Certificates

Additional insured, waiver of subrogation and primary wording, sent quickly when you need them.

Good to Know

Before You Buy

Contracts set most of what a contractor has to carry. We read yours and go through each point with you before you sign.

  • Contract terms. GCs, owners and lenders often require additional insured status, waiver of subrogation and set limits in the contract.
  • Workers comp. Many states require workers comp for contractors, in some states from the first employee.
  • Subcontractors. Uninsured subs can show up on a GC's workers comp audit and raise the GC's premium.
  • Bonds. Many jobs require a license or permit bond, and larger projects often require performance and payment bonds.
  • Completed work. Many claims come after the job is done. Completed operations coverage responds to covered claims from finished work.
  • Equipment. General liability doesn't cover your own tools and machines. Contractors equipment coverage does.

Pair It With

Gaps Contractors Often Miss

Liability is only the start. These need their own coverage, and we check for each one when we quote.

The Building Isn't Covered While It Goes Up

Your liability policy doesn't cover the structure under construction. Builders risk does, sized to the project.

Contracts Often Ask for Higher Limits

A commercial umbrella adds a layer above your liability, auto and employers liability, often for less than raising each limit.

Uninsured Subs Can Raise Your Premium

At audit, uninsured subs can be counted as your employees. Collect a certificate from every sub you hire.

Your Equipment Isn't Covered by Liability

General liability covers damage to others, not your own machines. Contractors equipment coverage protects those.

Your Business Depends on Key People

The GC needs a certificate by tomorrow. Can you help?

Yes. If you're a client, send us the holder's name, address and any required wording through the Client Center. For new clients, timing depends on the insurance company, and we'll tell you what to expect once we have your application.

What is "additional insured"?

It extends your liability coverage to the GC or property owner for claims that come from your work. Many contracts require it, and it has to be added on the policy, not just the certificate.

Do I need workers comp if it's just me?

It depends on your state. In Florida, a corporate officer may be able to file an exemption. Once you hire anyone, you need a policy. We'll walk you through which applies.
