Know Before You Buy

What Columbus Clients Should Know

Ohio's state-run workers' comp system is the biggest difference businesses notice.

General information only, not legal advice. Laws change, and your policy's terms decide what's covered. We'll confirm what applies to you before you buy.

  • Comp comes from the state. Ohio is one of four states where employers buy workers' comp from the state fund, the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation, instead of private insurers.
  • Mind the stop-gap. Because the state fund does not include employer's liability, many Ohio businesses add stop-gap coverage to their general liability policy.
  • Ohio auto minimums. Ohio requires at least 25/50/25 liability. Many drivers buy higher limits and uninsured motorist coverage to protect their assets.
  • Licensed trades. Ohio licenses commercial electrical, HVAC, plumbing, hydronics and refrigeration contractors at the state level, and local permits often ask for proof of insurance.
  • Storms and sewer backup. Wind, hail and basement water backup drive many Central Ohio home claims. Backup coverage is usually an endorsement.

Questions

Columbus Insurance Questions

Don't see your question? Ask us directly. A licensed agent will answer, in English or Spanish.

Can I buy workers' comp from a private insurer in Ohio?

No. Ohio employers get workers' comp through the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation. We help with the rest of your coverage, including stop-gap employer's liability.

What is stop-gap coverage?

It covers lawsuits from employees that fall outside the state comp system. Ohio's state fund does not include it, so many businesses add it.

Do you insure new construction homes in Columbus?

Yes, and builders risk coverage for the project while it is being built.
