Know Before You Buy

What Houston Clients Should Know

Flood, wind and Texas workers' comp rules are what most often change coverage in Houston.

General information only, not legal advice. Laws change, and your policy's terms decide what's covered. We'll confirm what applies to you before you buy.

  • Flood is a separate policy. Hurricane Harvey flooded tens of thousands of Houston homes, many outside mapped flood zones. Standard home policies exclude flood, and NFIP coverage usually has a 30-day wait.
  • Coastal windstorm coverage. In designated coastal areas, including parts of the Gulf Coast near Houston, windstorm coverage may come from the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association instead of your home insurer.
  • Workers' comp is usually optional. Most private Texas employers can choose not to carry workers' comp, but nonsubscribers take on notice requirements and lawsuit exposure.
  • Public jobs require coverage. If you build for the state, a county, a city or another political subdivision, the nonsubscriber option generally goes away.
  • Texas auto minimums. Texas requires at least 30/60/25 liability. Many Houston drivers buy higher limits and uninsured motorist coverage.

Questions

Houston Insurance Questions

Don't see your question? Ask us directly. A licensed agent will answer, in English or Spanish.

Do I need flood insurance if I am not in a flood zone?

Many Harvey claims came from homes outside high-risk zones. Coverage outside those zones is often affordable and worth comparing.

Should my business carry workers' comp in Texas?

It is a business decision with real tradeoffs. Nonsubscribers lose key lawsuit protections, and many contracts require comp. We help you weigh both sides.

Do you insure trucks based in Houston?

Yes. We write primary liability, physical damage and cargo for owner-operators and small fleets.
