What Detroit Clients Should Know
Michigan's no-fault choices and basement flooding are what most often change coverage around Detroit.
General information only, not legal advice. Laws change, and your policy's terms decide what's covered. We'll confirm what applies to you before you buy.
- You choose your PIP medical level. Since Michigan's 2019 no-fault reform, drivers can choose their Personal Injury Protection medical limit, from unlimited down to lower levels, with an opt-out for some people with qualifying health coverage.
- Lower PIP, more risk. A lower PIP limit lowers the premium but can leave you paying medical bills after a serious crash. We show you the tradeoff before you choose.
- Basement flooding. Heavy rains have flooded basements across Metro Detroit. Water backup coverage is usually an endorsement, not part of a standard home policy.
- Builders need a state license. Michigan residential builders and maintenance and alteration contractors must be licensed through the state's LARA department.
- When comp is required. Michigan requires workers' comp for employers with three or more employees, or one employee working 35 hours a week for 13 weeks or longer.

Questions
Detroit Insurance Questions
Don't see your question? Ask us directly. A licensed agent will answer, in English or Spanish.
Which PIP level should I choose?
It depends on your health coverage and how much risk you can carry. We compare quotes at several PIP levels so you can see the price difference.
Does homeowners insurance cover a flooded basement?
Water that backs up through drains usually needs a backup endorsement. Flooding from rising surface water needs a separate flood policy.
Can you help with high auto rates in Detroit?
Yes. We compare several insurers and check discounts, coverage levels and deductibles to bring the price down without leaving gaps.
