  • Liquor liability if you sell or serve alcohol

  • Equipment breakdown and food spoilage
  • Hired and non-owned auto for delivery drivers
  • Cyber coverage for card payments and customer data
  • Commercial umbrella for higher limits

Good to Know

Before You Buy

Food service claims come from fires, falls, alcohol and spoiled inventory. These are the points we go through with every restaurant owner.

  • Liquor liability is separate. Most general liability policies exclude claims tied to selling or serving alcohol. If you serve alcohol, you usually need liquor liability, and many states' dram shop laws can hold sellers responsible for what an intoxicated customer does.
  • Spoilage has to be added. A power outage or a failed cooler can ruin your inventory overnight. Food spoilage and equipment breakdown coverage are often add-ons, not standard.
  • Hood systems matter. Insurers look closely at kitchen hood suppression systems and cleaning records. Keeping them current can affect whether a company will write you and what it charges.
  • Delivery drivers need coverage. Employees who deliver in their own cars usually need hired and non-owned auto coverage on your policy, because their personal auto policy may not respond.
  • Slips and falls are common. Wet floors and busy dining rooms make customer injuries one of the most frequent restaurant claims. General liability covers them.

Questions

Restaurants & Bars Insurance Questions

Don't see your question? Ask us directly. A licensed agent will answer, in English or Spanish.

Do I need liquor liability if I only serve beer and wine?

Generally yes. Liquor liability applies to selling or serving any alcohol, and most general liability policies exclude those claims.

Does a business owners policy cover food spoilage?

Not always. Spoilage is often an endorsement you add. We show you whether each quote includes it and how much it pays.

Do food trucks need commercial auto?

Yes. The truck itself needs a commercial auto policy, and the business usually needs general liability for the food you serve.
